The hotel - Maropeng means "return to the place of origin" is designed on the theme of the four elemental forces of nature, earth, fire, water and ice that kick-started our planet some 3-billion years ago. This luxury hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Tumulus Visitors attraction and 10 km from the Sterkfontein Caves.

The visitors centre is an exciting and enthralling, world-class exhibition with the focus on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years.

4 July 2009:

This month’s event will celebrate the anniversary of the first man to land on the moon: Neil Armstrong’s historical lunar landing on 20 July 1969. The full moon will appear in the southern hemisphere on 18 July, allowing stargazers to get a clear view of the moon’s surface. 39 years ago, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin (now both retired at the age of 78) descended on the moon from the Apollo 11, and explored the moon’s surface for 2.5 hours. This event will be hosted by the Maropeng Hotel and includes welcome drinks and a three course set menu.

8 August 2009:

Maropeng will be hosting monthly stargazing evenings this year with its resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann. Celebration of International Year of Astronomy to help citizens of the world re-discover their place in the Universe through the day and night skies, engaging a personal sense of wonder and discovery.
This event will be hosted by the Maropeng Hotel and includes welcome drinks and a three course set menu.

22 August 2009:

This month’s stargazing event theme is “Explore the Milky Way”. Our galaxy, the Milky Way is “a large floating island of stars, in the vast ocean of the Universe”. August is the best time to observe the Milky Way and some of its 100-billion stars. Take a telescopic journey with Vincent to the centre of our galaxy, which will be directly over-head during the evening. This event will be hosted by the Tumulus Restaurant and includes welcome drinks and a buffet dinner. Children welcome

19 September 2009 :

Maropeng will be hosting monthly stargazing evenings this year with its resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann. This months event will look at Jupiter and Galileo: The Astronomical Giants.

Galileo was first to observe Jupiter in 1609 through a telescope. He is regarded as one of the first modern day scientists. Called the “father of modern observational astronomy”, Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher who played a major role in the scientific revolution. His amazement with the heavens was the foundation, on which his dedication and commitment to learning more and getting closer to the stars was based. This aided his genius in improving the telescope, above all others of its time, and then to his consequent astronomical observations. The motion of uniformly accelerated objects, taught in nearly all high school and introductory university physics courses, was studied by Galileo as the subject of kinematics. His contributions to observational astronomy include the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, the discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, named the Galilean moons in his honour, and the observation and analysis of sunspots.

This event will be hosted by the Maropeng Hotel and includes welcome drinks and a three course set menu

26 September  2009:

This stargazing event will be held in the Tumulus Restaurant in the Tumulus Building (main building) at Maropeng.  You are here: A brief journey through the time and space of our universe. An informative overview of astronomy, presented by our resident astronomer in his own unique style. This ties into the International Year of Astronomy 2009 theme. Regarded as the most “edutaining” astro-presentation by our conference guests. Viewing through the telescopes is weather dependent.

This event will be hosted by the Tumulus Restaurant and includes welcome drinks and a buffet dinner. Children welcome

17 October 2009:

Maropeng will be hosting monthly stargazing evenings this year with its resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann. This months event will be look at living amongst the Stars: Man and astronomy, their time and place in the Universe.

An ancient philosopher once wrote, “Do we gaze at the stars because we are human, or, are we human because we gaze at stars?”  From the beginnings of time, early man gazed upward and beheld the awesome splendour of our night skies. He wondered what the stars were, and what lay beyond. At some time in human history, he speculated about the stars’ origins, and also the origins of his very own existence. Our popular astronomy series of “after dinner” talks this month is entitled: “Living Amongst the Stars”, an illustrated talk looking into the fascinating realm of astronomy, and how it relates to our lives today.

This event will be hosted by the Tumulus Restaurant and includes welcome drinks and a buffet dinner. Children welcome.
