Full Description

As the world’s leading luxury game lodge, Thanda Private Game Reserve offers guests a choice between the opulence of the main lodge and the rugged refinement of the safari-style tented camp. Both options offer five star accommodation and service in very private surroundings. Accommodation packages at both the main lodge and tented camp include all meals, and game activities and selected local beverages.

Situated 23km north of Hluhluwe in northern Zululand, Thanda Private Game Reserve is a celebration of the famous African Zulu people and their rich culture. The philosophy For the love of nature, wildlife and dear ones embraces Thanda`s vision of creating harmony between man and nature. Thanda - love in Zulu - is truly a game reserve centred around love.

The main lodge encompasses nine bush villas which offer guests the epitome of self-contained privacy and sheer luxury. Circular in structure and reminiscent of a traditional homestead against a hill, each of the villas boasts a breathtaking view of the surrounding game reserve. 220 m² in size, each villa has its own spacious lounge area and master bedroom with an inter-leading fireplace. A thatched outdoor game-viewing deck (sala) and infinity pool offer refreshing solace from the summer heat. Each of the villas has a full en-suite bathroom complete with an enormous oval shaped bath and indoor and outdoor showers. The villas are all equipped with private bomas for an intimate and romantic dining experience.  Should the urge arise to venture beyond your private retreat, the luxury lodge’s public areas include a library, business centre, finely-stocked wine cellar and cigar bar, as well as a choice  of romantic dining venues in the heart of the African bush.

The tented camp has been built in colonial safari-style, best suited for guests who are searching for an authentic safari experience. The new fourteen luxury tents have viewing decks and en-suite canvas bathrooms. Public facilities at the tented camp include an attractive reception area, a curio shop, a new lounge area for guests to relax in, an enhanced dining tent, a 10x5 metre rim-flow pool and a new boma. The old sala was converted into a spa, which is run and managed by Africology. The tented camp is equipped with a generator which will power the luxury tents for a few hours each day so that guests are able to charge cameras and phones in the privacy of their tents. Even when the generators are running, lighting is minimal and the natural atmosphere of the tented camp is enhanced through boma fires and paraffin lanterns. Thanda now allows children from 6-years of age to stay at the tented camp making for a perfect family safari getaway.

Conceptualised and crafted for Swedish investor Dan Olofsson and his family, Thanda’s Royal Private Villa has now been made available to the public. Fit for royalty and surrounded by expanses of African bush, the Royal Private Villa can accommodate ten guests in five luxuriously appointed suites (three queens and two doubles). The exclusive-use Royal Private Villa welcomes families and groups of friends to enjoy the luxury and privacy of this five star home-away-from-home. The Royal Private Villa was designed for a family and thus it has a range of facilities that will make a family stay enjoyable and fun but still luxurious and exclusive.

Thanda’s chefs pride themselves on their abilities to offer versatile, mouthwatering dishes that appeal to guests of all cultures and nationalities. South African cuisine is only one flavour in the potjie of tastes that guests will be served. Seasonal game meat is always on the menu for the more adventurous eaters, but partaking is entirely optional. The maintenance of a herb garden at the Royal Private Villa ensures a constant supply of fresh ingredients. Despite the mélange of tastes on offer, the chefs are still very traditional when it comes to etiquette and value the art of fine dining.

Thanda Private Game Reserve boasts it`s own safari spa is now a fully-fledged Africology spa. Thanda has been offering the Africology range as in-room amenities to guests, and has carried the full line of spa treatments for a number of years and now offers the full range of Africology treatments and packages to all spa guests. Africology products are created without any chemicals or perfumes, and are preserved and fragranced by natural extracts and oils. Africology products are not tested on animals, and are all organically produced.

Since the lodge’s inception, Thanda’s aim has been to restore natural balance to the area by bringing back the species which were endemic to the area. Originally purchased as degraded cattle farms, rife with alien plant species, Thanda’s wildlife management has concentrated on an extensive rehabilitation project which included reintroducing the Big Five.
