Full Description
A mere three hours of road travelling, drive from Johannesburg, past Pretoria, South Africa`s capital city. Welgevonden is acclaimed as one of SA`s leading Private Game Reserves. Its 36 000 hectares are located in the Waterberg Biosphere, one of only three UNESCO Biospheres in South Africa. With 6 different veld types represented within the reserve and being home to 39 large mammal species, including 16 antelope species and some 250 bird species.
Africas Big 5 live in the reserve, including over 70 White Rhino. The Reserve adjoins the Marakele National Park. Plans to remove the fence between Welgevonden and Marakele are at an advanced stage, and the resulting ecosystems will encompass 120 000 hectares combined, thereby allowing free movements for all species contained in this animal reserve or park.
It is an area of great natural beauty mountains, grassland plains, woodlands, rocky outcrops and perennial rivers. Standing at some 1500 metres, it enjoys a temperate climate , and is free from malaria . It is here that Eugene Marais, the father of African ecology, came to live with the baboons and write his seminal book "The Soul of the Ape".
In the heat of the day, when the bush sleeps, and only the Cicadas sing, lose yourself in reflection by the pool`s quiet oasis. By night one can dine by starlight in the boma around a crackling fire.
